Listening under pressure

Notice what happens when an interview becomes difficult.

In conversation

Time pressure can turn listening into waiting for a familiar phrase. Participants examine how that habit affects the next question.

The practice uses an ordinary difficult moment: an unclear answer, a disagreement or a conversation that has moved away from its purpose. We pause to identify what is known and what still needs explaining.

A useful response may be a summary, a narrower question or simply a moment of silence. The choice follows the need of the conversation rather than the interviewer’s discomfort.
